Mostafa Maksy, 2008 Distinguished Paper Award winner. Lin Zheng was unable to attend the conference.

Maksy says, "we wanted to know some factors that may be motivating and/or helping students to perform well in the auditing course so we can emphasize those factors; and what factors that may be distracting students from earning higher grades so we can inform students to avoid them. We found that reading and writing skills are helping students to perform well but math and listening skills are not. We also found that planning to take the CPA exam or attend graduate school are not motivating our students to earn higher grades. Furthermore, we found that working too many hours per week, even in non-accounting related jobs, and taking on higher course loads were factors that, surprisingly, had no negative effect on students’ performance .”

Steve Del Vecchio, Program Chair for the 2008 NAAS meeting, commented, "I personally found Mostafa and Lin’s paper very interesting because it begins to look at what variable may influence a student’s success in upper level accounting courses. I believe this type of research may help us identify things educators can do at the beginning of a student’s college experience that may make students more successful in their senior and graduate accounting courses."

All of us from the North American Accounting Society congratulate Mostafa and Lin on their success!
