Dragonflies were one of the most misunderstood insect
groups inhabiting the mountain state, until now. In 2005, the West Virginia
Department of Natural Resources began the West Virginia Dragonfly Atlas project
in hopes of documenting the state’s dragonfly fauna. Dragonfly weekend
participants will collect dragonflies along with odonate experts and WVDNR
biologists, and actually participate in the atlas project. All dragonflies
captured will be identified, and data collected from dragonflies you collect
will be used and noted in the West Virginia Dragonfly Atlas. Along with field
trips, discussion groups on dragonfly identification, natural history and
conservation will be held at the Oglebay Institutes Mountain Camp in Terra Alta.
Highlights for the weekend include expert lecturers, field trips to Canaan
Valley, the states largest high elevation wetland, and collecting trips to
specific habitats in search of hard to find species. Join us on this weekend and
learn about these beneficial, beautiful insects and ultimately help
their conservation in
