Mannitol Salt Agar

Any growth on this medium indicates a tolerance for NaCl at a concentration of at least 7.5 percent, which is ch aracteristic of Staphylococcus.  Formation of a yellow zone around a colony indicates fermentation of the carbohydrate mannitol, a trait often associated with virulent strains of Staphylococcus.
