Departmental Template
Departments can update their Web pages with the template pages. These files use the same headers and navigation bars that appear on this page. Navigation between files is already set up, and comments in the source code identify where content and navigation can be altered.

Some Basic Information

  • The code in each page refers to a set of images and files available on marietta.edu. E.g., the Cascading Style Sheet, www.marietta.edu/department.css, establishes the fonts for the navigation bar and content with the <class=""> tag, so <span class="nav"></span> surrounds each nav bar link.
  • Pages are intended to be renamed. E.g., "page 1.html" can become "courses.html" Just rename the file (e.g., Save As... "courses.html" and update the navigation bar).
  • Additional pages can be created by opening a file, renaming it, and updating the navigation.
  • Faculty.html is set up for placing photos into a table and providing contact information.
Using the Template

Go to template/index.html.
Open each file in your browser and save all of the files in a new folder on your hard drive.

Archive the files that exist in your departmental directory (e.g., ~webadmin).
I.e., create a new folder within the directory (such as "~webadmin/archive/") and copy and paste all of the old departmental files into that folder.

Open the template files in a Web editor program (e.g., Dreamweaver).
Paste or type the content into these pages, being sure to update the names and links associated with the navigation bars. (If you are comfortable reading HTML source code, you can also use a program such as Notepad.)

Update and save each file on your hard drive.
Be sure to change the navigation bars links if you rename the files.

Rename the template file "home.html" as "index.html."
This will establish "home.html" as the default landing page in your directory. (E.g., "www.marietta.edu/~webadmin/" actually points to "www.marietta.edu/~webadmin/index.html")

Preview the files in a browser.

Transfer the files from your hard drive ("local site") to your departmental directory ("remote site").
Use a program such as WS_FTP or Dreamweaver.
