"In my time at Marietta, I’ve learned great communication skills through the hands-on curriculum and many presentations. This has been an amazing experience where I’ve learned how to balance priorities and time management. I expected to just be a ballplayer but I have been able to make numerous connections and grow my skills in all areas."
April: Looking Back on the Year
It’s hard to believe the semester is coming to a close. This year has been a wild ride! There have been so many ups and downs. Thankfully I can say that there have been more ups than downs.
There were a lot of things that I didn’t expect to happen. I was able to speak at the debate in the fall. I was inducted into Tau Pi Phi National Honors Society of business. I became president of Brother 2 Brother and much more. They were very unique experiences that gave me more insight to the value of being involved.
My favorite experience was going to the NCAA tournament. We were a great group and we worked so hard. We played really well as a team. It didn’t end the exact way we wanted but it was still an amazing run. As my senior year comes to a close I am able to reflect and be thankful for the journey over the last four years.
Thank you for being a part of it, and for supporting all of us students. When you share your advice, come back to campus to speak, volunteer for the College or make a gift, it makes Marietta better for all of us, and for the students who come next.

March: Spring Break in the Elite Eight
My break has been a little different than the typical college student. My spring break is packed with presentations, papers, exams and homework. Sounds very strange, I should be on a beach somewhere, right? Well, that wasn’t the spring break I envisioned, either.
I envisioned practicing right now for the Final Four. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it all the way there but Marietta Men’s basketball went on an epic run to the Elite 8. It was an amazing ride in my four years playing ball.
I usually relax by going to play basketball but with it being over right now, I’m unsure how to relax. I wasn’t quite ready for a break from basketball, and it’s strange to be done. It’s a big change, but I’m excited for whatever comes next.

February: Starting Spring Semester
Marietta College has brought my life so much joy, and I have really appreciated the growth that I’ve experienced during my time here. It has been a long journey and at the same time it feels like it’s going by too quickly!
I love the people at MC, whether they be teammates, friends, staff, faculty or coaches. My teammates are like my brothers. We do everything together and we always have fun doing it. I meet new people all the time in different diverse settings all around campus. Staff and faculty are invested in the students and it shows in the relationships I have established with them. Lastly, my coaches are not only great coaches, but mentors who set a great example with how they approach each and every day.
I first fell in love with MC when I came to a game as a recruit. The atmosphere was amazing! However, I never expected to fall in love with the community, the scenery and being involved. I got outside of my comfort zone as a freshman by being a part of CAMP 2019 for orientation, which was a great experience for a city boy. That allowed me to be more comfortable trying new things. Now, I am involved in almost too many things. However, I love being engaged on campus because it has helped mold me into a well-rounded individual.
I’d love to hear why you have love for MC, and I hope that you’ll help show that love during our annual Day of Giving on February 14. Please keep an eye on your email and on the College’s social media to learn more (including how you can win prizes on that day!).

December: Wrapping Up Fall Semester
The beginning of fall semester always seems to take its time. Soon after, things seem to accelerate and the next thing you know it’s Christmas!
One of the things I’ve really loved this past semester has been working out with the basketball team. I am going to miss the team lifts. We got faster, stronger, and tougher in a short amount of time. It is a great team bonding experience but definitely not for the faint of heart! It’s crazy to see how much we have grown not only as a team but as brothers.
I’ve also really enjoyed working with Fifth Street Consulting. It was really cool to get real world experiences in business right here on campus. It went so well that I will be coming back next semester.
Lastly, I’m going to miss the Mid Ohio Valley Entrepreneurship Expo. I’ve generated some meaningful relationships over the years by going to the event. It is also great to hear from entrepreneurs all over the country and learn about their struggles and successes.
As we go into finals week, I am stress free for the most part. Finals to me is like your ticket out. You’ve done all the work already, you just have to take a couple hours to show it. It is nice to only have finals a couple days out of the week, too, as it gives me ample time to study and relax. I believe I will perform well and I am excited to finish the semester.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Being at Marietta is all about what you make it. When I came in I didn’t expect to have the experiences I’ve had.
I’m so thankful for my family for helping me get to this moment. I’m also thankful for Coach Sales who recruited me to Marietta and got me to come to my first game. I’m thankful to the alumni and friends who have helped me with their gifts and the scholarships that have helped me stay in school.
Marietta is a special place and I’m thankful to be here. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!

Homecoming 2018 had one of the best atmospheres that I’ve seen at Marietta College. It was amazing to see so many people reunited with their loved ones.
I really enjoyed seeing my friends from previous years. I also loved witnessing others embrace their college friends. These friends are honestly much more than friends. These people are brothers and sisters who began their journey together at Marietta. Click on my video to hear more of my thoughts!
I can’t wait to see where this place we call home is going. The leadership on this campus demonstrates hard work and creativity in all aspects and I am thankful for them. The deeply rooted connection that our alumni have with this campus is making all these changes possible.
I am extremely thankful for your support. If you joined us for Homecoming 2018 I hope you enjoyed your time here, but if you weren’t able to return this time I hope you’ll be able to visit campus soon!

September: What's it like coming back?
I returned for my senior year with a sense of optimism and hope. It generated hope for a brighter future for my family and loved ones. Since I have been on campus that optimism remains but it feels a lot different than expected.
In all honesty, I guess there is no way to prepare for the way senior year feels. It is very nostalgic. It is a reminder that this is the last time I will be doing everything. I feel a sense of respect from my peers, high familiarity with the campus and town, and sadness that I will be leaving soon. The sadness doesn’t last long, though, because the feeling of accomplishment increasingly outweighs them all.

Hello everyone! My name is Melvin Shuler II. I am a senior at Marietta College in which I major in Marketing and minor in Advertising & Public Relations, as well as Entrepreneurship. I am a student athlete. I will be earning my third varsity letter this year and I am excited about the upcoming season. I am also an employee. I work for the admission office where I also operate as a student ambassador. I give tours of the College and promote the College to incoming students. Lastly, I am an active member of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, where we work together as a support group and participate in bible studies. Marietta College has brought more opportunities than I could expect. I came here expecting to just play basketball but I’ve learned so more. I am excited to share my journey with you all! Hope to hear from you soon.
