11th annual Physics Colloquium opens Sept. 17

The 11th annual Marietta College Physics Colloquium opens Friday, Sept. 17, with Dr. William McNeely, who is retired from the Boeing Corporation.

His presentation is on “How a Particle Physicist Applied his Training at the Boeing Company,” and will be held in the Rickey Science Center.

“The Physics Colloquium Series at Marietta College is used to expose students to the wide variety of research being done in physics,” said Dr. Dennis Kuhl, Chair of the Physics Department. “Each semester, we try to include speakers from a mix of backgrounds and research specialties. This fall we will have talks from four areas of physics research, plus one talk dealing with the related field of materials research.”

The Oct. 22 speaker has yet to be determined, but on Friday, Nov. 5, Andrew Grimm will present on “Recent Advances in Renewable Energy.” Grimm is a member of the Marietta College faculty.

On Monday, Nov. 15, Anousheh Ansari will hold a public lecture in the Alma McDonough Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Her lecture, “Reaching for the Stars and Getting There,” is about being the first female private space explorer. Ansari traveled in space in 2006 and has been an inspiration to many women.

Wrapping up the semester on Friday, Dec. 3, is Dr. Ann Bragg, who will present “Season of Light” Planetarium Show. Bragg is the Director of the Anderson Hancock Planetarium at Marietta College.

Unless noted, all colloquia speakers begin at noon in Rickey 150 and should last about 50 minutes with the Physics department providing the lecture, pizza and beverages for the public free of charge. Please contact Jacquelyn Lane at (740) 376-4820 or lanej@marietta.edu if you plan to attend.
