Children return to campus for annual summer reading camp
The Marietta College and Marietta Morning Rotary Club Summer Reading Camp is offering a four-week summer reading camp that is scheduled to begin June 15. The camp, which is open to children who will be entering kindergarten through the sixth grade in the fall of 2009, ends July 3.
Offered by the Marietta College Education Department, the reading camp is designed to assist students in the development of improved reading abilities, oral and written communication skills, and positive attitudes toward reading. Children's literature and hands-on experiences are used as primary instructional tools and students work in small groups with trained instructors that include professors in the education department as well as Marietta College education majors.
"Reading Camp is an excellent way for children to extend learning into the summer months," said Dr. Dorothy Erb, Chair of the Education Department. "Our teachers work to build and enhance reading and writing skills in an atmosphere designed to motivate students."
The cost of the camp is $200 per student. Tuition for a second child from the same family is $150. A limited number of need-based scholarships in the amounts of $100 and $150 are available.
