College celebrates annual International Week April 5-9
The spring semester may be winding down, but it’s also time for Marietta College’s annual International Week to bring unique, fun and educational ways to experience different cultures. The week lasts from April 5-9.
The week begins Monday, April 5, with the always delicious, “A Taste of the World,” a sampling of cuisine from around the world, prepared by Marietta College students in The Gathering Place. Food will be served from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Also kicking off the week is the International Photo Contest where photos will be on display in Thomas Hall.
On Tuesday, April 6, students who studied abroad will give presentations in Thomas 209 from 6-7:30 p.m. The Department of Modern Languages is providing refreshments. Voting for the International Photo Contest begins on this day as well.
Another full schedule of events are taking place on Wednesday, April 7, with the International Café. Taking place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Upper Gilman, a sampling of Lebanese food from Chams Restaurant and snacks from around the world can be explored. In addition to the great food for the day, four separate foreign language activities are offered also in Upper Gilman. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Chinese and Spanish poster presentations will take place. From 11 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., students can learn to write and say their names in Chinese or listen to French poetry, and from noon to 12:50 p.m., the popular Chinese Calligraphy activity will be offered.
Thursday, April 8 features a lecture from Gao Jing, visiting scholar from the University of International Relations in Beijing, China, who will be presenting a lecture on “A Bird’s Eye View of Chinese Martial Arts (Wushu)” from 7-8 p.m. in the Fireplace Lounge of Andrews Hall. Chinese egg rolls and tea will be served to those attending.
The week concludes with the announcement of the International Photography Contest winners, whose pictures will be posted at Gilman Dining Hall during the International Theme Dinner. This is the only event of the week with a price on it ($8.99 for non-students/guests). The dinner runs from 5-7 p.m.
The Department of Modern Languages founded International Week in 1995 and remains the main organizer of all programming. It provides students and members of the surrounding communities an opportunity to explore and enjoy cultures with which they might otherwise have little or no contact. It also showcases opportunities for international experiences through academic programs at Marietta College. Other sponsors include the Office of International Programs, Office of the Provost and Office of Student Activities and Greek Life.
All events are open to the public.
