College, City unveil sign that honors six-time national champions
Marietta College officials, along with Marietta Mayor Joe Matthews, unveiled a street sign honoring the six-time NCAA Division III Baseball National Champions during a special ceremony at Don Schaly Stadium, Wednesday.
The navy blue sign includes the Etta Express’ interlocking MC logo along with the years of the championship seasons — 1981, 1983, 1986, 2006, 2011 and 2012. Current coach Brian Brewer is responsible for the last three championships, including the first ever back-to-back titles in school history. Legendary coach Don Schaly led the Pioneers for 40 years and amassed 1,442 victories and three national titles of his own.
College Art Director Ryan Zundell designed the sign, which is 36-inches in diameter and were made out of recycled railroad crossing signs.
Matthews said there are four signs that will be placed at “entrances to the city.” The locations are:
-- Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Welcome Center off of Interstate-77’s Exit 1.
-- Greene Street coming off of the Williamstown Bridge.
-- Ohio 60 traveling from Devola into Marietta.
-- Ohio 7 near the Rinks flea market.
