Experienced leader hired as VP for Student Life/Dean of Students

Dr. Robert Pastoor spent just two days on Marietta College’s campus, but the impression it left was unmistakable.

“I felt very much at home when I was there,” he said. “Marietta College has an outstanding reputation among other educational institutions so I just felt good about this opportunity.”

Marietta College President Jean A. Scott announced today (Jan. 5, 2010) the appointment of Pastoor as Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, following a successful national search.

Pastoor is expected to start Jan. 18. He replaces Dr. Lon Vickers, who retired in December after serving 6 ½ years at Marietta. He was the Associate Dean of Students four years prior to that. Vickers has agreed to remain at Marietta until Pastoor arrives on campus.

“This is a significant moment for Marietta College. Dr. Pastoor brings a wealth of experience in student life, including the development of first-year seminar programs, campus housing, judicial systems, academic warning programs, and a four-year learning model for student affairs integrated with academic learning outcomes,” Scott said. “He has collaborated with enrollment management, academic affairs, and athletics in significant ways. At a time when Marietta College is challenged both to grow and to enhance the quality of the student experience, Dr. Pastoor's skills will be especially valuable to us.”

Pastoor, who was most recently the President of St. John’s Catholic Prep in Frederick, Md., will focus on campus life, residential life, student well-being and health and other areas that impact student success and overall experience.

Pastoor joins Marietta after more than 25 years of student affairs experience in higher education. He has also served as a vice president for 17 years at three institutions. From 2002-04, Pastoor was Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of San Diego. He was Vice President for Student Life at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., from 1995-2002, and Vice President for Student Affairs at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., from 1987-95.

“The size of the school, and the fact it’s a liberal arts school were appealing to me,” Pastoor said. “I’m also very excited about the relationship between Student Life and the McDonough Leadership Program. Everyone I met at Marietta was very impressive, and I’m looking forward to being part of the community.”

Pastoor earned his Bachelor of Science degree in History and Education from Mount St. Mary’s. He has a Master of Education in Counseling from McDaniel College and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership, Higher Education and Technology Leadership from the University of Montana.

Pastoor is married to Ann Marie Lynch, and they have three children, Thomas, 18, Tully, 14, and Marijka, 11. They currently reside in Frederick, Md.
