Important Message about Diversity and Inclusion
Dear Marietta College Students, Faculty and Staff:
Marietta College is committed to providing a learning environment that is welcoming to all and dedicated to the principles of diversity and inclusion. At matriculation, students sign the Pioneer Pledge confirming their willingness to treat each individual on campus with respect while learning to appreciate the differences that make each individual and culture within the college unique.
Understanding that news of a weekend incident involving the use of racial epithets has caused great concern for many members of our campus community, I want to express my deep concern for every person who has felt less welcome or less safe at Marietta College in the past few days.
The administration has launched an immediate inquiry into the reported behavior, and will use the results of that investigation to determine the appropriateness of bringing charges for violation of the Student Code of Conduct against the students involved.
Because we believe deeply that only in truly diverse and inclusive communities can students be prepared for the challenges of the twenty-first century, we will expand our dialogue about what it means to be a diverse community and develop initiatives during the remaining weeks of this semester to guide our actions as we move forward. I invite you to join in that conversation.
Dr. Jean A. Scott
