Marietta College gears up for 'Once Upon A Time at Marietta'
Marietta College alumni will join students on campus for Homecoming 2006 on Oct. 13-15. This year, in an effort to bridge the gap between students and alumni, the Campus Union Board and the Alumni Office agreed on a common theme, "Once Upon a Time at Marietta."
Preparations for student-sponsored activities are well underway: nine registered campus groups have nominated king or queen candidates. During the week leading up to the Oct. 14 Marietta varsity football game against OAC rival John Carroll, those student organizations will introduce their candidates in a variety of fun-filled competitions that incorporate the homecoming theme.
First up is the banner competition. CUB supplies each participating group with a plain, twin-sized bed sheet that must be transformed into a banner that incorporates the homecoming theme and cheers on the Pioneers to victory. The banners will be displayed throughout Homecoming Week, and then moved to Don Drumm Stadium on Saturday for the game.
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, participating groups will offer up their best homemade desserts in "Munchies on the Mall." Both booth decorations and desserts will be judged in this tasty competition that continues until the participants run out of food or the CUB Traditions Chair closes the event.
In a competition designed to feature the many talents of the participants, each group will perform a five-minute song or skit for the student body in the "Homecoming Croon." The croons will be judged on creativity, originality and incorporation of the theme.
Elections for Homecoming king and queen will take place Thursday and Friday, Oct. 12 and 13, during lunch and dinner hours. Students can vote for their favorite candidates for homecoming king and queen at voting booths on the top floor of Gilman Student Center.
A cheer competition, pep rally and bon fire scheduled for 8:45 p.m. Friday in Parsons Field offer participating groups another opportunity to demonstrate their school spirit. Cheers created for the competition will be judged on creativity, originality, costumes, organization participation and school spirit.
On Saturday, Oct. 14, students and alumni are invited to mingle from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for music, entertainment, food, and "all things MC" at "Marietta on the Mall." The Homecoming Parade participants, including competing floats, will line up at the Gathering Place at 10:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m., winding from the Gathering Place, down Butler Street to Fourth Street, down Fourth Street to Putnam Street, down Putnam Street to Second Street, then across Butler and back to the Gathering Place. Winner of the parade competition will be announced at "Marietta on the Mall."
MC's Pioneers take on the John Carroll in football, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Don Drumm Stadium. During halftime of the game, the homecoming king and queen will be crowned and winners from all homecoming events will be announced.
Student events for "Once Upon a Time at Marietta" will wrap up with a DJ, foam, food and fun at an After-FOAM party for all MC students to be held at the Gathering Place from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday.
