Plenty of activities lined up for first week back on campus
Marietta College's more than 1,450 students will have plenty to keep them busy during their first week back on campus.
First things first, the students will get back into the swing of things academically by attending the first classes of the fall semester. Classes begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25.
Anyone seeking a regional history lesson as well as a taste of a the local culture can stop by the opening reception of the River Retrospective Art Exhibition from 7-9 p.m. in the Hermann Fine Arts Center.
The exhibition is an overview of steamboats and river navigation on the upper Ohio River and its tributaries. The exhibit is free and open to the public with hours from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1-10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Marietta's College Union Board is conducting a Theme Night at Gilman Dining Hall from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The action really takes off on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29-30, with the annual Welcome Back Bash.
On Friday, comedian Ryan Conner will perform in The Gathering Place at 8 p.m. followed by the Charles Sumner Harrison Organization's annual Ice Breaker at 10 p.m. Earlier that day students are encouraged to cheer on the Pioneer volleyball team as they take on Oberlin at 3 p.m. and Grove City (Pa.) at 7 p.m. in the annual River City Volleyball Tournament on Fenton Court.
On Saturday, the volleyball action continues from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Marietta's soccer teams take the field in the Marietta Soccer Classic. The women face Bethany (W.Va.) at 2 p.m. and the men play Walsh at 4 p.m. on Marietta Field.
From 1-3 p.m. will be Club MC on the Christy Mall. If there is inclement weather Club MC will move inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center. The Bash closes with musician Jason Levaseur in The Gathering Place at 8 p.m.
