Dear Marietta College Family:

It is with great sadness that I share with you that one of our students has passed away of apparent natural causes this morning.

Joel Wunnenberg, 18, of Springdale, Pennsylvania, was a freshman majoring in Petroleum Engineering and a member of the football team and the McDonough Leadership Program.

His immediate family has been informed, and I ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn this tremendous loss. I also ask that you keep his teammates, friends and coaches in your prayers.

We currently have counseling services available to students in First Year housing in need of support. There will also be counselors and clergy available between 3:00-9:00 p.m. today in Andrews Hall. The Health and Wellness Center can also help guide you through this process, as well as connect you with off-campus support, if needed.

I know most of you are leaving campus for Spring Break next week. Please take care of yourselves during this time away from Marietta — while you’re traveling to your destination, while you’re socializing and during your return. Our Pioneer family needs to remain close to each other, particularly as we mourn Joel’s loss.

In the coming days, I will share any funeral arrangements the family makes, as well as information regarding a campus memorial for Joel.

Sincerely,
Bill Ruud
President
