Dear Alumni and Friends,

Homecoming is right around the corner, and Judy and I hope to see as many of you as possible on campus to celebrate all things Marietta College.

But that’s not why I’m reaching out to you today. I have more big news to share!

It’s no surprise to you that Marietta College holds a wealth of history that stretches well beyond its 1835 chartering. Your lives have been impacted by that history, and your lives have been a part of building our celebrated history.

That’s why you’ll be proud to learn that David McCullough — the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author, historian and Medal of Freedom honoree — is currently working on his next project at Marietta College. You can read about the details here.

He and celebrated researcher, Michael Hill, recently visited campus and met with History faculty and Legacy Library staff to make the announcement about the project, which focuses on Manasseh Cutler, who was one of the original shareholders of the Ohio Company and pioneer of the Northwest Territory.

Marietta College’s own Linda Lee Showalter ’79, who is the Library Associate for Special Collections, and other members of the library staff are assisting with locating items related to Dr. Cutler and his associates contained in the library.

It is an honor that Marietta College’s archives will play an important role in the development of Dr. McCullough’s next book, and I know you share my pride of Marietta College and this community for the contributions it made during the development of the Northwest Territory and the building of our great nation.

I look forward to seeing Dr. McCullough on campus over the next two years and am excited to read his finished product. More immediately, I look forward to seeing many of you at Homecoming.

Sincerely,
Bill Ruud
