Professor Ruud has enjoyed a distinguished career as an attorney in Ohio, Idaho and California, as well as a professor covering topics related to ethics, law and leadership.

She worked for Curtis & Arata as a lawyer from 2003-08 providing legal advice to families regarding personal wealth planning and preservation, trust and estate law, tax and charitable planning and planning for the family business at various stages of growth. She also worked as an attorney for Perkins Coie, LLP, and Stoel, Rives, Boley, Jones & Grey (both in Boise, Idaho), as well as Vice President of Compliance-Trust Department at US Bancorp in Boise. Professor Ruud started her legal career at Eastman & Smith, LLP, in Toledo, Ohio, and she was one of the firm's first female partners. She worked with Eastman & Smith from 1984-93. She is still an active member of the Idaho Bar Association (inactive member of Ohio and California Bar Associations).

She has previous teaching experience at the University of Northern Iowa (2013-16) and Shippensburg University (2007-09). She started teaching courses at Marietta College in 2017 soon after she moved to the Mid-Ohio Valley with her husband, Bill, who is the 19th President of Marietta College.

Professor Ruud has remained highly active and visible in the communities where she has lived. She was the editor of Proteus Magazine (a Shippensburg University publication), an editorial advisory board member with the Academic & Business Research Institute, a committee member for the Shippensburg Public Library expansion and on the Stanislaus (California) County Estate Planning Council.
