A molecular phytopathologist by training, Dr. Hempel enjoys anything plant related and the outdoors. She studied at one of German's most renowned universities with a major in Microbiology. and minors in Plant physiology, molecular biology, environmental hygiene. She worked on gene expression during the biotrophic phase of the rust fungus Uromyces fabae and successfully defended her doctoral dissertation in ecotoxicology, plant ecophysiology, and plant pathology. After a few years in corporate research, she immigrated with her family to the United States and is working full time as an Associate Professor at West Virginia University-Parkersburg.
