Dear Marietta College Community:

After 17 years, the last seven as Provost and Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Janet Bland has informed me of her intent to retire from Marietta College, effective August 17, 2022.

I want to thank Janet for her many contributions as a member of the faculty, faculty council, and, of course, for the positive impact she has made as Provost and as a member of the College’s senior leadership team. Most recently she has led the transition of Marietta into a student-ready college.

Janet’s career at Marietta has been illustrious, and I’m pleased to share some of her career highlights:

Janet arrived in 2005 as an Assistant Professor in the English Department. As a faculty member, she won the Research Award, the Innovative Teaching Award, the First Year Advising Award, the McCoy Award for Teaching Excellence and was named an Outstanding Educator in the State of Ohio. She served as the Division Coordinator for Arts and Humanities, and then as the Associate Dean for Accreditation to work with the Higher Learning Commission.

In 2015, Janet was appointed Provost and Dean of the Faculty. During her time in that office, she added well over a dozen new majors, minors, and certificates, undergraduate and graduate. Academic Affairs also redesigned the College’s First Year Experience, as part of the creation and implementation of our Foundations of Excellence program and strategic plan to support the First Year. And with a great deal of effort from our dedicated faculty, under Janet’s leadership we created and implemented a new General Education Curriculum.

During the early days of the pandemic, Janet led the Academic Recovery Team that created the schedule and plan for the continuation of curricular delivery under difficult circumstances. Most recently, Janet worked with the faculty to finalize the Ohio Transfer Module agreement, which will help us attract more transfer students.

Lastly, I want to credit Janet for her focus on gender equity in faculty pay that was attained during her time as provost.

When I became aware that Janet was considering retirement, I began exploring the possibility of bringing on an interim provost before we begin a national search for a permanent replacement. I plan to share more about our next steps soon.

Please join me in wishing Janet and her wife, Elinor, best wishes as they begin this next stage of their lives together.

Sincerely,

Bill Ruud
President and Professor of Management
