Dear Marietta College Family,

As you and your family celebrate our nation’s independence this weekend, Judy and I want to wish each of you a Happy Independence Day!

Normally, I would tell you to enjoy hosting a barbecue or joining your family and friends for a fireworks celebration during our extended Fourth of July holiday (July 3-5). However, as we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, I hope you have a safe and responsible celebration while protecting yourself and everyone you care about.

I also ask that you take a moment to reflect on the brave women and men who fought and demanded independence more than two centuries ago. Even in the most challenging of times, I believe we are most fortunate to live in the greatest country on Earth.

At this time of the year, I always try to come up with a quote that sums up how I’m feeling. This year, I have turned to something the prominent abolitionist Frederick Douglass said: “The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful and virtuous.”

Thank you for all that you do for Marietta College and our amazing community.

Bring Forth a Pioneer!
