“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Sermon delivered in Selma, Alabama, on March 8, 1965.
“Maybe the need in our world today is for the maladjustment that will cause committed men to take a stand and speak out against racism, against militarism, against economic exploitation.”
— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Thomas Series Lecture delivered at Marietta College on March 2, 1967.
Marietta College is proud to announce our upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day of service on Monday, January 20, 2020, with the theme “Stand Up, Speak Up, Rise Up for Justice.”
Last year, 400 members of the campus community participated in the inaugural MLK Day of Service at Marietta College. This year we are counting on you to step up and make the day’s impact even larger.
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will be commemorated through a campus-wide day of service that layers educational programming and reflection in the morning, followed by hands-on service-learning projects that address community needs, and complemented by a series of in-depth “lunch and learn” opportunities for engagement, education, and discussion.
This day, coordinated by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Civic Engagement, provides service and learning opportunities for every student on campus, along with faculty, staff, and community members.
The following activities will take place on Monday, January 20, 2020:
- 8:00 a.m. — Registration opens and hot breakfast available at DBRC
- 8:30-9:30 a.m. — Opening ceremony and student presentations at DBRC
- 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — Community service projects on and off campus
- 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. — Lunch and Learns (lunch provided, pre-registration required)
Register for any or all activities here: https://mcdonough.wufoo.com/forms/mlk-day-2020-stand-up-and-speak-up-for-justice/.
Students, faculty, staff, and community members may sign up as an individual or a group. Additional information about programs, including available service project locations, can be found on the online registration form. All registered participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
Please take a moment before you leave campus for winter break to commit to being a part of this “day on, not a day off” — a day of service.
