President's Welcome
Thank you for your interest in Marietta College, one of the
premier liberal arts colleges in the Midwest.
Marietta College was founded nearly two centuries ago in Marietta, Ohio, the first settlement in the Northwest Territory. Initially charged with educating youth in "all the various branches of the liberal arts and sciences," Marietta College has continued to blend a strong curriculum in these areas with selected career-oriented programs. We take pride in maintaining excellent and demanding academic programs that result from high expectations of our faculty, who are dedicated to working with talented undergraduate students. The learning environment is culturally and geographically diverse with students coming from 42 states and 12 countries.
At Marietta College, we believe the best preparation for your future, and for any career, derives from a sound education anchored in the liberal arts. America's leaders concur in the value of a liberal education in preparing individuals for responsible positions in the rapidly changing world in which you will spend your professional life. Through the study of human achievements in extending the boundaries of knowledge, you will begin to comprehend the complexities of the universe; refine your values; understand and respect cultural, racial, and ethnic differences; and develop to your full individual potential. At Marietta, we strive to prepare you to go beyond making a living to making a life worth living.
In addition to the more traditional liberal arts programs, Marietta offers several innovative career-oriented programs such as sports medicine, computer science, petroleum engineering, and environmental science. We also provide a diversity of concentrations such as leadership, finance, and Asian studies, which provide opportunities for a rich undergraduate experience.
Our strong liberal arts curriculum and variety of majors will provide you a foundation for graduate school and any career, but Marietta College is more than this. We will enrich your Marietta education through some very special opportunities that include: The first-year student program, MC's international community, McDonough Leadership Program, MC's Honors program, MC's faculty.
The above are examples of some of the distinctions which give Marietta College its identity, but all programs share a common focus on our students and our faculty. Ultimately, it is these two groups which make a great college, and we at Marietta College are committed to enhancing the excellence of both.
