Art
The Art Department at Marietta College provides opportunities for the study and creating of artwork for all students, regardless of their major or field of interest. Marietta College students study and work with an easily accessible Art and Graphic Design faculty who are actively involved in their field as professional and exhibiting fine artists, working commercial artists and business owners. Whether you intend to major in Studio Art or Graphic Design, or simply wish for an awareness and ability of the visual arts to be an important part of your collegiate years, the department has opportunities for you.
Music
From large scale choral performances to small instrumental ensembles, from individual lessons to classroom learning, improving one's personal musicianship and sharing artistic expression are central to our music program.

The music department welcomes the participation of all interested students in its ensemble programs, private lessons, and music courses, regardless of major. At the same time, Marietta music majors are assured a thorough preparation for graduate school and for future careers within the profession.
Theatre

The department offers BA and BFA degrees in theatre, a BFA in Musical Theatre, and a minor in theatre. We encourage students to participate actively in their education by undertaking independent studies and small group projects that meet their educational needs. At Marietta, classes are small and contact with faculty is intensive both inside and outside the classroom. We like to think that the theatre is our classroom and that every minute of every day is an opportunity to learn more.

Department of Music to host Lincoln University Concert Choir: April 27

The Lincoln University Concert Choir will appear in concert at the First Congregational Church of Marietta, 318 Front St., Marietta, at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 27.

The Lincoln University Concert Choir is under the leadership of Albert R. Lee, faculty member in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The students who make up this premier choral ensemble hail from California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. They major in a variety of disciplines including music, religion, philosophy, criminal justice, early childhood education, physics, biology, and actuarial sciences, among other undergraduate majors offered at the university.

Lee joined the Lincoln University music faculty as Interim Conductor of the Concert Choir in January of 2008. Since completing his formal musical training at University of Connecticut and The Juilliard School, Lee has appeared as vocal soloist with the Opera Theater of Saint Louis, Palm Beach Opera, Berkshire Opera Company, Kentucky Opera, Connecticut Concert Opera, Saint Luke’s Chamber Orchestra, the Collegiate Chorale of New York City, the Pro Arts Symphony, the Missouri Symphony, the New Haven Chorale, Heritage Chorale, Caramoor International Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival in his primary work as a solo vocalist. In recent years Lee has worked to preserve and expand the performance of Negro Spirituals with domestic and international performances as a soloist in the American Spiritual Ensemble. He has also collaborated with the late great pianist/comedian Victor Borge on an adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen. Lee received his formal conducting training while a student at the University of Connecticut under the tutelage of Dr. Peter Bagley.

The Choir is accompanied by Eva Young, adjunct instructor of piano and staff accompanist. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan. Young has given concerto performances in Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. She continues to perform as a recitalist and accompanist throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

The concert program features selections from Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Vivaldi’s Gloria and the Broadway Musical Ragtime. Special emphasis in the concert program is placed on spirituals and the music of African American Composers.

Lincoln University, the nation’s first Historically Black University, was chartered in April 1854 as Ashmun Institute. Horace Mann Bond, the eighth president of Lincoln University, eloquently cites in the opening chapter of his book, Education for Freedom, that this was “the first institution found anywhere in the world to provide a higher education in the arts and sciences for male youth of African descent.” The story of Lincoln University goes back to the early years of the 19th century and to the ancestors of its founder, John Miller Dickey, and his wife, Sara Emlen Cresson. The Institute was renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after President Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln University celebrated its sesquicentennial or 150th anniversary during 2004. Lincoln’s main campus is located in Southern Chester County, and the University’s Graduate and Continuing Education Center are in downtown Philadelphia. Approximately 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at the University.

This concert is sponsored by The Edward E. MacTaggart Department of Music at Marietta College.
