Music Education Students Attend State Music Conference

Approximately 900 music education majors from Ohio colleges and universities and more than 3,000 music educators attended this year's conference.

The music education majors of the Edward E. MacTaggart Department of Music at Marietta College attended the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference in Cincinnati from February 7-9. During the course of the conference the students attended clinics presented by outstanding clinicians from around the country and concerts by a large variety of music groups from Ohio. All music education majors at Marietta College are members of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC), the student arm of the National Association for Music Education. Annual attendance at the state conference is a part of their studies toward a degree in music education.

According the Professor Marshall C. Kimball, director of bands and instrumental activities and co-advisor of the campus CMENC organization, stated “Our local chapter of MENC received recognition at the Ohio Music Education Association State Board meeting and also at the State CMENC banquet. It was a great opportunity for our music education students to network both with clinicians and other music education students from around the state. It was a proud moment for our music department to see our students in that setting. Although our music education program is new this year, the growth of the program and students and the recognition of our program at the state level has been very rewarding.”

Nick Giebel, a music education major and president of the local CMENC chapter said of the conference “It provided a valuable experience to not only learn from professionals but to meet other music education students with goals similar to our own. It was a tremendous opportunity to advance the name of Marietta College in the state music education arena.”

The Ohio Music Educators Professional Conference is held annually in various parts of the state and is attended by active music educators, college professors and college music education majors. Approximately 900 music education majors from Ohio colleges and universities and over 3,000 music educators attended this year's conference. The three-day conference is comprised of approximately 250 clinics and 50 concerts.

Eight Students Selected To Perform At OPCICA Annual Festival

21st Annual Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association (OPCICA) Festival, January 18-20, at the College of Wooster

The Edward E. MacTaggart Department of Music has announced that eight students have been selected to perform in the 21st Annual Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association (OPCICA) Festival, January 18-20, at the College of Wooster. The event will feature the performances of the OPCICA Honor Jazz Ensemble and Honor Concert Band. The Honor Jazz Ensemble will present their concert on Saturday evening, 8pm in the Freelander Theatre and the Honor Concert Band will perform on Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm in McGaw Chapel. There are 23 private colleges in OPCICA, representing all areas of the State of Ohio. OPCICA’s primary purpose is to develop a closer network of communication and resource sharing among the instrumental departments, divisions or conservatories of the various privately funded institutions of higher education within the state of Ohio.

Representing Marietta College in the Honors Jazz Ensemble are, Phil DeOrsey, trumpet, senior from Bellingham, MA; Zenny Frary, baritone saxophone, junior from Burbank, OH and Doug Ferimer, trombone, senior from Houston, TX. Five Marietta College students are participating in the OPCICA Honor Concert Band: Casey Mercer, tenor saxophone, freshman from Wingett Run, OH; Mary Rizzardi, percussion, freshman from Latrobe, PA; Greg Snyder, baritone saxophone, freshman from Coolville, OH; Lauren Morgan, French horn, junior from St. Marys, WV and Amanda Griesser, French horn, sophomore from Grove City, OH.

Marshall C. Kimball, assistant professor of music and director of bands and instrumental activities, will be a conductor with the Honor Concert Band. Professor Kimball stated, "This is a wonderful opportunity for our instrumental students to play with instrumentalists from 22 other private colleges in the state of Ohio. The students will get to rehearse together for two days and give performances. It's a strenuous schedule of rehearsals to prepare the concerts in that short time period. It's an incredible musical opportunity and pushes our students to a new level of musicianship and rehearsal concentration. They will improve and benefit from the experience." This is the first year that Marietta College has had students in the Jazz Ensemble. The annual festivals have enriched the lives of hundreds of college instrumentalists as well as the conductors from many of the state's private institutions. Students are nominated by their home college conductor and instrumentation is set by the festival committee in November. These students are together for two days, and in three rehearsals, their program is rehearsed and prepared for the concert.

Professor Marshall C. Kimball is Director of Bands and Instrumental Activities at Marietta College. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree cum laude in Music Education and a Master of Music from Ohio University. Additional course work has been completed at Ashland University, VanderCook College of Music, Akron University, Illinois State University and Walsh University. He presently is a member of MENC, OMEA, Phi Beta Mu, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha, NEA, OEA, The Society for Music Teacher Education and the College Band Directors National Association. Professor Kimball’s duties include: Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Quintet, Horn Choir, Woodwind Quintet, Percussion Ensemble, Saxophone Trio, Music Fundamentals, applied instrumental lessons and a Freshman Year Seminar Class. He also serves on the Curriculum Committee and Wellness Committee at the college.

In addition to his college responsibilities, Professor Kimball is in demand as a clinician and judge in the State of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, State of Washington, and Oklahoma. He judges solo and ensemble, concert band and marching band competitions. He also serves as the state chair for the Music Support Group of the Ohio Music Education Association.
