Biography

As an assistant professor Smith has taught several courses, including Introduction to Advertising, Media and Society, Advertising and Public Relation Campaigns, Capstone, Introduction to Public Relations, Advertising Copywriting and Design, The History of Rock and Roll, and Consumer Behavior. She often teaches a PIO 101 course. She serves as the Internship Coordinator of department internships and helps raise funds for WRMT-FM through corporate grants. She has been a member and campus advisor of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and has taken students to professional development meetings, national conferences, and regional competitions. She has attended numerous professional development workshops and conferences, including conferences held by the American Advertising Federation and the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication. She has presented at the Ohio Communication Association Annual Conference and at workshops for the Marietta SCORE and Small Business Development Center, Methodist University of Piracicaba (Sao Paulo, Brazil) graduate program, and Chinese professionals from the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs. For three years her Campaigns class placed as national semi-finalists in the Collegiate Effie competition. She has also received the Alpha Sigma Delta Academic Excellence in Teaching Award, the Edward G. Harness Outstanding Educator Award, and the Ohio Communication Association Ohio’s Distinguished Teacher Award.

Prior to working in education, Lori Smith served as Advertising Director of The Marietta Times and had been in the newspaper business for over 15 years. She held a number of advertising positions with the Gannett Company, including sales, sales management and commercial printing consulting. She won the President's Certificate of Achievement, which is awarded annually to the top 10 Gannett advertising managers and she attended a number of sales and marketing training conferences. During this time, Lori also served as an adjunct lecturer at Marietta College.

Lori has been active in the community serving on the board of The Castle Historical House Museum, as well as involvement with United Way, Rotary, Telesis, and has volunteered at the Daily Bread Kitchen and The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.
