For McDonough Scholar Brandice Kunze ’28, the opportunity to spend her summer gaining hands-on experience through the Sally Evans Internship Award brought together two of her passions: marketing and working with others.

A Marketing major with a minor in Leadership, Kunze received the Sally Evans Internship Award this spring and spent her summer as an intern with Building Bridges 2 Careers (BB2C), a local nonprofit dedicated to connecting students, educators and businesses with meaningful career opportunities.

“I am so lucky to have gotten this opportunity,” Kunze said.

At BB2C, Kunze gained experience on both sides of the organization—its business operations and its makerspace, a creative environment where community members can explore activities ranging from sewing and woodworking to painting, 3D printing and stained glass.

On the business side, Kunze worked alongside Kaitlin Streator, learning firsthand how marketing supports a nonprofit organization. Her responsibilities included editing and filming social media videos, appearing in videos, creating flyers, brainstorming new marketing ideas and assisting with a variety of projects. She also attended business meetings, giving her the opportunity to learn from professionals while building meaningful connections within the community.

“I worked with both the business side and the makerspace over the summer,” Kunze said. “She let me edit, film, and star in videos for social media, make flyers, brainstorm ideas on how we can up the marketing and help her with any tasks necessary.”

Kunze also discovered a different side of her interests through BB2C’s makerspace. Working with Holly Hamrick, she helped with a middle school STEAM camp and assisted with planning for a high school camp. She created promotional materials, explored the makerspace’s many creative spaces and even had the opportunity to develop and lead her own classes.

The experience gave Kunze the chance to work with younger students while developing her leadership skills.

“Holly taught me how to work with older children and how to positively impact their lives through STEAM activities,” Kunze said.

For Kunze, the internship was about more than gaining experience to add to her résumé. It gave her opportunities to try new things, contribute her own ideas and learn from people working in different areas of an organization.

Most importantly, it gave her the chance to form relationships that she will carry with her beyond the summer.

“My favorite part of interning at BB2C was the connections I made with so many wonderful people,” Kunze said.

Through the Sally Evans Internship Award, Kunze was able to turn her classroom learning into real-world experience while discovering new ways to apply her interests in marketing and leadership. Her summer with BB2C provided a glimpse of the many possibilities ahead—and another meaningful chapter in her Marietta College experience.
