Marietta College S.T.R.E.A.M. Camp (formerly Reading Camp)
S.T.R.E.A.M. Camp, formerly known as Reading Camp, is a three-week program sponsored by Marietta College Education Department, designed to assist students in the development of improved reading abilities, oral and written communication skills, and positive attitudes toward reading. New this year, students will also receive instruction in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Children’s literature and hands-on experiences are used as primary instructional tools. Camp is held on the Marietta College campus, where students work in small groups with future (Marietta College students) and current teachers. Our theme will be Citizen Scientist and out main activities will be around the book Ada Twist, Scientist, by Andrea Beaty. Time: 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Ages: Rising Kindergartens – Rising 6th graders in the Fall of 2022
Location: Erwin Hall
Cost: $300 (full and partial scholarships are available to those who qualify); everyone must pay a $20 fee when they apply (cash, check, or online with a credit card). Camp is full day, everyone receives a t-shirt, and lunch will be provided!

HOBY

About: HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students. HOBY provides students, for whom most are selected by their schools, the opportunity to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning, and motivation-building experiences, beginning a lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others. Due to the selfless efforts of volunteers and the contributions of generous donors, more than 10,000 students participate in HOBY programs annually.

Upward Bound
Camp: Residential
Dates: June 12-July 15
Ages: Students must have completed the eighth grade, be between the ages of 13 and 19, and have a need for academic support in order to pursue a program of postsecondary education.
Cost: Free (federally funded program)
About: Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.

4-H Space Adventure Camp
Camp: Residential or Day Camp

Ages: 11-13 and/or students who were fifth to seventh graders

About: Campers will have the opportunity to explore the world of flight and science as they build and test flying machines, conduct computer flight simulations, learn about the principles of aerodynamics and gain an overview of the development of the space flight program. The three action-packed days will take campers through an exciting adventure in hands-on learning including:

  • build and fly hot air balloons, model rockets and other 'things that fly'
  • tour the universe within a planetarium
  • explore the stars and planets
  • learn about an astronaut's life on a mission
  • computer flight simulation and space exploration
  • launch their own model rocket
  • participate in a special graduation ceremony

About: This Institute is for teachers to work through a variety of lab experiments that will improve their ability to teach specific physics topics to their high school students. High school science teachers from Ohio, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania participate in the five-day, hands-on teaching seminar.
