Jordan Pallay ’21 chose to major in Actuarial Science because of her love for math but soon found that the degree gave her an advantage in the job market because it allowed her to expand her knowledge of in-depth business concepts.

I had a fantastic relationship with the faculty in my major. By my senior year, I had worked with every math professor in the department. They all really cared about my academic and personal success. I could walk into the math office and have a conversation with anyone who walked in.

“I think the number of classes I had to take in the B&E department really helped me land a job. These classes gave me a foundation of knowledge that can be applied to any industry. My internship was in the insurance industry and my full-time position is with an energy holding company. These two industries are vastly different, but I am confident that I am well prepared for any challenge ahead of me.”

Jordan says students who enjoy having a rigorous course load and are eager to learn and participate in class will thrive in the Actuarial Science program. Another benefit is being able to interact with professors in the Math and Computer Science Department and the Business and Economics Department.

“I had a fantastic relationship with the faculty in my major. By my senior year, I had worked with every math professor in the department. They all really cared about my academic and personal success. I could walk into the math office and have a conversation with anyone who walked in.”

The Business-related courses Jordan needed to take to complete her major also made an impact on her success after graduation. She was particularly fond of Finance after taking a class with Dr. Duong Le, Associate Professor of Finance.

“I loved her and her classes so much I decided to pick up a minor so I could continue to learn from her. That also complemented my major very well. I think picking up this minor really made me versatile and competitive in the job market.”
