On Sept. 19, Doug Ankrom ’97, assistant professor of accounting, and his senior Accounting Capstone students participated in the Building Bridges to Careers: Discover Finance, Banking & Accounting Day in Marietta. The event welcomed 48 students from seven local high schools, along with a group of homeschooled students, all from the Mid-Ohio Valley, giving them a hands-on look at careers in banking, accounting, and financial management.

Throughout the day, students connected with local accountants and auditors, explored diverse business opportunities, and gained practical insights into taxes, budgeting and financial planning.

During lunch, Ankrom and his Capstone students shared their academic journeys and what inspired them to pursue accounting. Ankrom highlighted how Marietta College’s accounting major aligns with the new CPA Evolution licensure model, adopted in nearly 20 states, including Ohio.

Reflecting on the experience, Ian Wohnhas ’25 said, “It was a great opportunity to meet and talk with the next generation of students interested in business and accounting. I hope they gained insight into the field and are inspired to explore the profession.”

Gabe Tingle ’25 added, “I think the biggest impact we had was showing students the many paths an accounting degree can open. Our life journeys are unpredictable, and entering college with an open mind is key.”

The event not only introduced high school students to potential careers but also reinforced Marietta College’s mission of engaging with the community and preparing students to make meaningful contributions locally and beyond. For the Capstone students, Building Bridges to Careers: Discover Finance, Banking & Accounting Day was an opportunity to invest in the profession they are about to enter while also underscoring the importance of giving back.

Within Marietta’s Department of Business and Economics, students can pursue business-focused majors in accounting, economics, finance, land and energy management, management, marketing, and sport management.

Marietta’s accounting graduates are making an impact locally in Washington County, Ohio, as well as at leading organizations nationwide, including Big 4 accounting firms, publicly traded corporations, and state and federal government agencies.
