LOGAN — The Hocking County Commissioners heard from representatives of the Center for Appalachian Innovation at Marietta College at their weekly meeting on Thursday. The group spoke about opportunity zones, which are low-income census tracts that have been nominated by U.S. governors and certified by the federal treasury.
The group members explained that these low-income census tracts that could become opportunity zones, of which Hocking County has four, are areas that would become eligible for certain incentives that can drive businesses, housing and other economic development opportunities into them. They then asked for a letter of support from the commissioners advocating for Hocking County’s low income census tracts to be designated as opportunity zones. This letter will be presented to the governor’s office, and was agreed upon by the commissioners. However, they added that they will rank the tracts they are most interested in seeing become opportunity zones with the help of the Logan mayor, as three of the tracts are inside the city.
