The Office of Student Connections and Outreach at Marietta College will host “The Movement: 50 Years of Love and Struggle” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in The Gathering Place. The event is free and open to the public.
“The Movement: 50 Years of Love and Struggle” is a visual chronicle highlighting key political and cultural milestones across the five decades following the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Through powerful storytelling, the production reflects on the evolving African American experience and the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice.
Written and performed by Emmy Award-winning actor Ron Jones, the theatrical production features Jones portraying multiple characters as he guides audiences through pivotal moments in African American history. Through these dynamic character portrayals, Jones blends history and performance to create a compelling and immersive experience.
“‘The Movement: 50 Years of Love and Struggle' powerfully brings to life the political and cultural milestones that have shaped the African American experience in the decades following the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965,” said Tony Mayle, associate dean of students and director of Student Connections and Outreach. “This production challenges our campus community to reflect, learn, and engage more deeply in the ongoing pursuit of justice and meaningful social change.”
Supported by multimedia elements, including archival footage and music spanning generations, the performance spotlights cultural shifts from the civil rights era to modern-day. Both humorous and poignant, Jones captures defining voices and moments of each era, showcasing the progress and pain of the African American community.
The program offers an opportunity for reflection, dialogue and shared understanding as the College community and the broader public come together to examine African American history and its continued impact on society today.
