Tyler Sullivan name baseball head coach

Entrusted with leading one of the most successful programs in Division III baseball history, Tyler Sullivan has been named head baseball coach at Marietta College.

"I am thrilled to announce Tyler Sullivan as our next Head Baseball Coach. Tyler has a vast baseball background that appealed to the search committee, and he impressed everyone during his on-campus visit," Marietta College Director of Athletics Joe Bergin said. "I ask that folks who are passionate about Marietta baseball spend five minutes with him and they will understand why he is the right person to run the program."

Sullivan becomes the 15th Marietta College head coach in the 152-year history of the baseball program, and only the third since 1964.

“Coach Sullivan's passion for developing players both on and off the field and his commitment to excellence were readily apparent in his interview,” said President Kathleen Poorman Dougherty. “I am excited to see what the future of Marietta baseball holds under his leadership. I am confident that he will be a wonderful asset to our community.”

Sullivan comes to Marietta after spending the last three years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level working with hitters and infield defense. He was the offensive coordinator at Eastern Michigan University in 2024 before moving to Longwood University for the last two seasons.

Bergin said Sullivan understands the tradition and the expectations of Marietta Baseball, and his leadership of the team will strengthen one of the College’s most storied programs while also creating new Landmark Experiences for student-athletes and deeper connections for alumni and supporters.

"I’m extremely honored to carry on the legacy that is Marietta Baseball,” Sullivan said. “Thank you to Dr. Dougherty and Athletic Director Joe Bergin for putting their trust in me to lead one of the premier Division III Baseball Programs in the country."

Sullivan felt the family-like atmosphere of the Marietta community as soon as he stepped on campus and looks forward to building strong relationships with players, alumni and in the community as he works to develop young men, consistently compete for championships, and represent Marietta College with pride.

"Marietta baseball is rich in history, and we embrace the responsibility that comes with it," Sullivan said. "The generations of players, coaches, alumni, and supporters who built this history will always be the backbone of the program. There has been a standard of excellence set that we will work tirelessly to uphold daily!"

Prior to Eastern Michigan, Sullivan was an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Seton Hill University for five seasons where he worked with the Griffin hitters, infield defense, and baserunning. He helped lead the Griffins to three NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Division II World Series in 2021.

Off the field, Sullivan was Seton Hill’s academic coordinator. The Griffins were PSAC Academic Champions for four straight years from 2019-22. In addition, as an American Sports & Fitness Association (ASFA) certified trainer, Sullivan served as the strength & conditioning coach for the Griffin baseball and women’s lacrosse teams.

Sullivan coached the Johnstown Mill Rats of the Prospect League, the premier summer collegiate wood bat league, for two seasons leading them to their first playoff appearance in 2022. He also worked as the assistant manager of baseball operations for ERA Sports Inc. in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Sullivan started his collegiate playing career at the University of Evansville helping the Aces win a Missouri Valley Conference championship. He transferred to Seton Hill and led the Griffins to a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles earning Most Valuable Player honors at the PSAC Tournament in 2018.

A 2017 graduate of Seton Hill, Sullivan earned a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management. He completed an MBA in Management from Seton Hill in 2018.

What They’re Saying:

Tyler will do a great job recruiting and developing the type of player that MC needs.  His understanding of the game, how to teach it, and relationship-building skills will make a quick impact on the roster, and campus. Despite not being a MC grad, he will be very thoughtful in honoring the traditions that have made Marietta College Baseball the best DIII program in the country for so many years.

Mike Mulvey '13, Hampden-Sydney College Baseball Head Coach

Tyler Sullivan is a home-run hire. His work ethic, ability to connect with players, and knowledge of the game sets him above the rest. Pair that with his in-state roots and connections in Pennsylvania for recruiting and you have the perfect recipe. There is no doubt that the rich tradition of success at Marietta will continue with Sully at the helm.

Ray Noe, Longwood University Head Baseball Coach

A storied program like Marietta Baseball deserves a coach that will lead with passion. Tyler Sullivan will pour a championship standard into every part of the team. He is a true relationship builder, energy giver and winner. He’s coming home to Ohio to immerse himself into upholding the tradition of Pioneer baseball. I’m so excited for Tyler, and for the players that will benefit from his leadership.
