Marietta College has applied to the FCC for a power increase for WCMO. WCMO, 98.5 FM, is the student-run radio station at the College. WCMO came on the air in 1960 as a “ten-watt” or Class D station. Recently, the Federal Communications Commission opened a filing window for new low-power (LP) class stations. These stations operate at a maximum power of 100 watts.

Marietta has applied for a license for a new low-power station on 97.5 FM. If a construction permit is granted, the new station will use the same antenna location as WCMO but will then transmit with 100 watts. The new station will be known as “WCMO-LP,” replacing the 98.5 signal. The station will continue with the same programming currently heard on WCMO. It is expected that the new station may debut as early as this summer.
