Juneteenth 2020 Statement
Dear Marietta College Community:
The recent turbulent events in America demand our attention on matters of racial justice; in this light, Faculty Council asserts the following:
Academia is the place for complicated but important conversations; therefore, we promise not only to mourn the deaths of George Floyd in Minnesota, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, Tony McDade in Florida, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, and the countless black lives that have been taken too soon, but also to ensure that the rampant institutional racism and prejudice that prevail in places of power in the United States are questioned, abandoned, and for the health of our nation, dismantled.
On this observance of Juneteenth 2020, we the faculty at Marietta College promise you the students: we will listen, we will challenge both you and ourselves to be better, and we will ultimately create an environment for true growth and change. We care about you, and we want you to feel safe while at Marietta College. This is the time and this is the place for not just lip service but real advancement.
Peace and justice to you and yours,
Katy McDaniel, Faculty Council Chair
