Degree: B.S. Computer Science
Internship: IT Engineer Intern (GrandRock Exhaust)
Location: Kumasi, Ghana

Henry Gyamfi ’23 chose to major in Computer Science at Marietta because it would give him the opportunity to explore his passions: solving challenging problems and making a positive difference in the world with new technology. Within two years of being a Computer Science major while also following a Pre-Medicine track, the Charles Sumner Harrison Scholar had landed an internship as an IT Engineer for an exhaust manufacturer in Cleveland, Ohio.

I plan to work as a big data engineer right after college. In my opinion, I would recommend MC as a special place to receive an education because of how excellent, understanding and helpful the professors are.

“At GrandRock, some of my duties include: assisting in the procurement of licenses, installation, and updating of software and hardware services; providing technical support and troubleshooting all IT-related issues about the company’s printers, barcode scanners, PCs and software; enhancing system diagnostics, securing the company’s PCs with modern technology, setting up software and hardware services, and providing training and assistance to employees about the use of the company’s IT tools; and attending and contributing during decision making at all IT-related meetings.”

Henry connected with his summer internship through his own personal research and by working with the College’s Career Center. The Career Center helps students and alumni strengthen their résumés, identify internship and job opportunities, connect current students with alumni working in their specific fields of interest, and helps prepare students for the internship, job or graduate school interview process.

“The Career Center was extremely helpful in my search for an internship, and gave me great training and interview tips, which enabled me to get this internship,” Henry says. “The education I have received from Marietta College has prepared me to be confident and always ready to solve critical problems. As a Computer Science major, the numerous projects which I have worked on in class and with my mates has also helped me to be patient and think critically, a skill which has helped me a lot as an IT Engineer Intern.”

The hands-on experience Henry gained at his internship and within the course curriculum at Marietta will help develop critical skills needed to succeed in the tech industry.
