Center for Appalachian Innovation
The Center for Appalachian Innovation at Marietta College has selected 18 students to serve as research fellows and interns
through partnerships with local organizations across Appalachian Ohio. The highly competitive fellowship and internship program provides Marietta College students with hands-on opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to meaningful projects that address the needs of the region. Students will work alongside local businesses, nonprofit organizations, community agencies, and
public sector partners on initiatives related to economic development, nonprofit capacity building, workforce needs, healthcare access, data analytics, and regional research.

The selected students represent a wide range of academic disciplines and will contribute to projects designed to strengthen both student career readiness and the capacity of community partners throughout the Appalachian region.

“This program reflects the Center’s mission of connecting student talent with the real opportunities and challenges facing Appalachian Ohio,” said Michelle Jeitler, Academic Program Director of the Center for Appalachian Innovation. “Our
fellows and interns will engage in meaningful research and applied work that supports local organizations while gaining professional experience that will prepare them for leadership roles after graduation.”

Professor Ann Nicely, who is working with students on materials related to the spring semester research project focused on Opportunity Zones in Appalachian Ohio, emphasized the significance of the work being conducted through the Center.

“What makes this project so meaningful is that students are doing work that has real relevance beyond the classroom,” said Professor Ann Nicely. “They are learning how research can directly support economic growth and community planning throughout Appalachian Ohio.”

Community partners also highlighted the impact students will have through summer placements
