The Honorable J. Christopher “Chris” Giancarlo served as the 13th Chairman of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission, after first being nominated as a CFTC Commissioner by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed in 2014, then nominated as Chairman by President Donald Trump and unanimously confirmed in 2017. Recognized by the International Financial Law Review as one of the most influential individuals in financial regulation, Giancarlo has been a prominent voice on financial market regulation, derivatives, digital assets, blockchain technology, and the future of money; as CFTC Chairman, he served on major U.S. and international financial regulatory bodies, testified frequently before legislative bodies in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, and oversaw initiatives including the launch of the first bitcoin futures contracts and the creation of LabCFTC. He is Senior Counsel at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Chairman of the Board of Common Securitization Solutions LLC, an independent director of the American Financial Exchange, a member of the Advisory Board of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, and founder of the Digital Dollar Project, which supports research and public discussion on a potential U.S. central bank digital currency. Before public service, Giancarlo held senior leadership roles at GFI Group and Fenics Software, practiced law in New York and London, and earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law and his B.A., Phi Beta Kappa, from Skidmore College.
