NEXT GENERATION (NEXT GEN) is an academic program that encourages students to experience nonprofit leadership from the board of director's perspective. This one-credit per semester class creates a cohort of students and nonprofit organizations that mutually benefits all participants. Students are partnered with a nonprofit organization based on interests, skills, and availability for two semesters (spring, fall).
Students gain:
- Experience within the nonprofit sector
- The ability to gain specific skills and experiences
- An ongoing cohort-based learning opportunity
- A chance to get involved in the local community
- An opportunity to network with board members
- An increase in personal leadership capacity
- The opportunity to share thoughts and ideas with fellow students and board members
Student Expectations:
- Must be a second-semester freshman, sophomore, or junior
- Required to attend class once per week
- Commit to being a part of Next Gen for 2 semesters (spring, fall; summer is optional)
- Work to ensure that your class schedule will not conflict with your board meetings
- Identify and participate in an active board committee
- Attend all board, committee, and class meetings
- Represent yourself, Marietta College, the Office of Community Engagement, and Nonprofits LEAD well by being a responsible, punctual, and engaged board member
- Follow all safety guidelines of Marietta College and the participating organization
Applications will close on Friday, October 30th, 2026. Students will then be scheduled for a short 1:1 meeting to discuss the program further and ask any questions you may have. Parings will be complete before Thanksgiving.
