Marietta College Volunteer Code of Conduct

(Policy approved by the Board of Trustees October 2022)

On behalf of the students, staff, faculty, and alumni of Marietta College, we are grateful for your volunteer service. The following code of conduct is to help ensure that the Marietta volunteer program and event experiences are meaningful, productive, and safe for all participants.

Marietta College requires each volunteer to read and comply with this Volunteer Code of Conduct in order to be eligible to participate in Marietta College volunteer opportunities.

The Volunteer Code of Conduct only needs to be acknowledged once and is then considered valid for the duration of a volunteer’s service regardless of role or duration.

Volunteers represent Marietta College. For this reason, volunteers are expected to act in the best interest of the college and align with its mission; to foster a collaborative and supportive environment among all volunteers; and to remain respectful and considerate at all times when interacting with other volunteers, alumni, parents, students, campus staff and faculty, and other constituents. This expectation applies to engagement in person, virtually, or through digital platforms. Any behavior deemed inconsistent with the goals and objectives of the program or the College, or that violate any applicable College policy, may result in termination of the volunteer role or removal from Marietta College volunteer programs indefinitely.

Marietta College is committed to fostering an environment in which all members of our community are safe, secure, and free from sexual misconduct of any form. All volunteers are obligated to abide by Marietta College’s Policy on Gender-Based Harassment, Discrimination, and Misconduct.

Use of Confidential Information and Confidentiality

All information gained while volunteering for any Marietta College volunteer program is confidential and only to be used for legitimate purposes related to such programs. Information includes constituent data or information gained through conversations. Additionally, disclosing the academic standing or grade information of a student to anyone without the student’s consent is a violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Conflict of Interest

It is the policy of Marietta College that members of the community conduct the affairs of the College in accordance with the highest ethical and legal standards. To avoid a conflict, volunteers should be free from actual or potential influence of personal considerations or relationships when conducting business or when making recommendations or decisions on behalf of advisory boards or Marietta College. Some volunteer positions may be required to acknowledge a Conflict of Interest policy in addition to this Code of Conduct. Profile and Appropriate Use of Online Portals, Databases, or Messaging Functions

Volunteers should maintain accurate profile information for any Marietta College volunteer program and appropriately use any online portal, databases, or messaging functions that may include personal information. Do not engage in the following: distributing or promoting spam or any duplicative or unsolicited messages; harassment, threatening behavior, or any other communication that would violate the legal rights of others; posting or distributing any inappropriate or obscene material or information; harvesting or otherwise collecting information about others including phone numbers and email addresses; creating false identities or profiles for the purpose of misleading others; interfering with or disrupting the service or networks connected to the program.

If driving students, staff or faculty, alumni, or other volunteers, you understand that you assume personal responsibility for the safety of yourself and your passengers. The College bears no liability for use of personal vehicles or property.

Alcohol and Controlled Substance Regulation

Use or possession of alcoholic beverages by individuals under the age of 21 (or the age of majority in the jurisdiction) or providing or distributing alcohol to underage individuals is prohibited. For more information, please see the Marietta College Student Life Alcohol Policy and Philosophy Supporting the Policy.

Marietta College complies with the federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, which requires a drug-free campus community. Even under circumstances where permissible by state law, as an institution receiving federal funding Marietta College policy prohibits the possession, use, manufacture, cultivation, dissemination, and storage of marijuana by students, faculty, staff, and visitors at College-sponsored or College-affiliated events or programs.

Reporting Violations

By volunteering with Marietta College, volunteers agree to this code of conduct. If you suspect a violation of the Volunteer Code of Conduct has occurred, please contact the Marietta College Director of Human Resources at crh006@marietta.edu or Office of Alumni Engagement at alumni@marietta.edu in a timely manner. You may also submit an anonymous concern through EthicsPoint at https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/en/default_reporter.asp.

Issues reported to these offices will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken to address any violations of this Code of Conduct or other College policies referred to herein.

Any violations of the Volunteer Code of Conduct may result in termination of the volunteer role or removal from Marietta College volunteer programs indefinitely.

Changes or Revisions to Code of Conduct

Marietta College may be required to update and/or modify the Volunteer Code of Conduct as needed. Your volunteer participation in any Marietta College program or event will constitute your acceptance of such changes. Additionally, certain volunteer opportunities may require a background check.
