The Washington County Historical Society Annual Pioneer Dinner once again honors the brave men who blazed the trail westward; 48 hearty souls who had the vision and fortitude to bring westward expansion from a dream to reality. The 1938 Northwest Territory Sesquicentennial celebration was conceived as an earnest educational and inspirational event that offered the opportunity for Americans across the nation to join in the pioneer spirit. Mindy Cayton, WCHS Archivist, will guide the audience through the unprecedented logistics and the interactive events of this celebration sharing official photographs and movie reels.

Beginning in Ipswich, Massachusetts with the destination of Marietta, Ohio, this commemorative journey “took the show to the people” across six states; it included the recreation of the journey of the original 48 pioneers, pigeon races, pageants, parades, the
crowning of Miss Marietta, the Presidential dedication of the Start Westward Monument and much more. Please join us for this exciting evening as we celebrate Washington County’s rich history and the epic event that celebrated the pioneer spirit across America.
